Study Humanities

Undergraduate and postgraduate study options for the Department of Humanities

Studying on one of our Humanities courses is about being part of a passionate and creative community of students, researchers, academics and professionals.

At all levels of study you can expect guidance tutorials in order to meet your specific and individual learning needs, whilst the flexible nature of our courses mean you can pursue your own personal interests through a wide variety of optional modules. You’ll learn in modern classroom and lecture theatre facilities along with access to the University’s 24hr library where our department’s library resources recently benefited from a £600,000 investment.

Our English and Creative Writing course is ranked 15th in the Guardian University Guide (2019) and our BA History course has the top student satisfaction score in the UK (100%, NSS 2019).

We are in the Top 20 for our publications in both English and History (2014 REF).

Alongside our research active staff informing your learning you will have access to advice and teaching from our Department partnership with New Writing North and wider employer connections. Our English Language and Linguistics courses offer you the possibility of gaining experience in the field of teaching both at home (Student tutoring) and abroad (TESOL).  You will also have the opportunity to spend experience another culture by spending a semester at a university overseas. Our History courses will see you gain experience on a professional placement through our unique Your Graduate Future module whilst our American Studies course gives students an excellent opportunity to broaden their horizons and experience a different culture as part of our study exchange programme.

In Music your weekly one-to-one instrumental/vocal tuition is supported by seminars and we take a practical approach to music history in which we visit local museums and archives.
