Prof John Dean

Dean was appointed as Lecturer (1988), Senior Lecturer (1990), Reader (1994), Principal Lecturer (1998) and Associate Dean (2004) at Northumbria University. He was awarded a personal chair by Northumbria University in August 2004. In 1998 he was awarded a D.Sc. (London) in Analytical and Environmental Science and was the recipient of the 23rd SAC Silver Medal in 1995 (awarded by the Royal Society of Chemistry Analytical Division).

John obtained his BSc (Hons) in Chemistry from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (now Manchester University), an MSc in Analytical Chemistry and Instrumentation from Loughborough University. This was followed by a PhD, DIC at Imperial College, London under the supervision of Professor R.D. Snook. Postdoctoral research followed at the then Food Science Laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) in Norwich in conjunction with Professor L.C. Ebdon at the University of Plymouth.

John is a Chartered Scientist, Chartered Chemist and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He has been principal or co-investigator of externally funded research grants with a total value in excess of £1.5M and has published extensively (over 180 papers, book chapters and books) in analytical and environmental science. He has supervised over 26 PhD students.  John is a current member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Analytical Division Council as well as a past chair of the North East Region (RSC) Analytical Division.
