Natalie Wortley

Associate Professor

Department: Northumbria Law School

Natalie was called to the Bar in 1999 and practised as a barrister for over 10 years, specialising in criminal cases. She was awarded the Bar Council Certificate of Merit and is a former Inns of Court Pegasus Scholar. She was appointed as a Legally Qualified Chair of Police Misconduct Panels in 2016 and became a Deputy District Judge (Magistrates’ Courts) in 2017.

Natalie is also Associate Professor of Law, teaching Criminal Law, Evidence and Advocacy. In addition to being qualified to teach Advocacy to students, Natalie is a Grade 1 Trainer (a ‘trainer of trainers’) for the North Eastern Circuit, where she regularly trains pupil barristers and new practitioners.

Natalie’s research focusses on vulnerable suspects and defendants, and criminal evidence, and she has published over 30 peer reviewed articles, case notes and book chapters in these areas. She is convenor of the Criminal Justice Section of the Society of Legal Scholars, a member of the Scientific Committee of the International Academy of Law and Mental Health and was Case Note Editor for the Journal of Criminal Law (2014-2017).
