Presenting and Interpreting Asian Art Collections

The course will be delivered by Jean Brown - an Associate Professor at Northumbria University who has over thirty year experience in caring for collections and has recently led on the development of the Woon Gallery of Asian Art at Northumbria University. 

Northumbria University has established at its Newcastle campus the Woon Gallery of Asian Art. The Gallery houses 47 items from the Woon Foundation’s Collection to support research and public exhibition in the North East of England.

Learning will take place in the Woon Gallery of Asian Art as well as in other teaching spaces in the well appointed Sandyford Building on the City Centre Campus.

The University has many partners and longstanding relationships in Singapore and China and this collection allows us to extend and build on those relationships through greater cultural understanding.

The Gallery and Collection is a dynamic centre for teaching Northumbria programmes including Conservation; Fine Art; Creative Industries Management; Visual Cultures; Fashion; History; and Design. 

Northumbria University is one of only a handful of Universities to hold an Asian Art Collection of such International significance. The Woon Collection includes items from across Chinese Cultural History including significant items from the Han Dynasty, Northern Wei Dynasty, Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms. It was newly opened in 2018 and therefore provides a unique opportunity to learn about the very latest approaches to interpretation, presentation and public engagement with Asian Collections.
