This course is for Chinese Curators who are interested in developing their skills in interpreting and presenting their art collections, and engaging visitors. The course will be based at the Woon Gallery of Asian Art at Northumbria University, and include the theory and practice of the latest approaches for interpretation, presentation and public engagement.

The programme will provide an opportunity to engage with the following activities:

• Class based tuition in the Woon Gallery of Asian Art and teaching space within Northumbria University. Classes will be delivered in English.

• A programme of cultural trips and visits including the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, the Oriental Museum in Durham and the V&A Museum of Art and Design in London.

Day 1 – Arrival / Meet and Greet
Day 2 – Free day in Newcastle
Day 3 (First Day of Programme Week 1) - Welcome and introduction to the Woon Collection of Asian Art
Day 4 – Display Case Design and layout
Day 5 – Cultural trip to the Oriental Museum in Durham
Day 6  - Interpretation, Catalogues & Labels
Day 7 – Cultural trip to the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh
Day 8-9 – Weekend / Free days
Day 10 (First Day of Programme Week 2) - Environmental Monitoring and Management, Lighting  and Integrated Pest Management 
Day 11 - Emergency Preparedness, Response & Recovery. Conservation Cleaning 
Day 12 – Cultural trip to the V&A Museum of Art and Design in London 
Day 13 - Transit, Packing, Handling and the Role of the Courier 
Day 14 - Storage, Access & Security. Final Presentation and afternoon tea 
Day 15-16 – Weekend / Travel home

There are no entry requirements

During the course participants will:

• Develop strategies for wider participation and external engagement

• Develop strategies for storage, display and transit 

• Understand the protocols and approaches to writing labels and catalogues: 

• Understand the questions that must be asked prior to conservation cleaning
