This programme is fully funded support for expanding micro and small businesses to shape recruitment and HR practices.

Hiring and retaining individuals with the blend of skills, knowledge and experience to deliver continued growth is a challenge faced by all businesses. Micro-businesses and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) that are seeking to bring in new talent are now able to tap into specialist recruitment and human resource development support from university experts at zero cost.

The support is open to businesses located in Tyne and Wear or Northumberland that have been trading for at least 12 months. Each business will receive up to 12 hours of online advice, workshops and mentoring from highly skilled and successful business practitioners who will assist participants to:

Design and implement effective recruitment plans and processes.
Develop understanding of how to conduct job analysis, produce job descriptions and application documents.
Identify appropriate channels to engage suitable candidates.
Establish methods to screen, shortlist, interview and evaluate candidates.
Develop HR practices that align employee performance with organisational strategy.

The programme runs for 12 hours over 5 weeks. Date and delivery information for June delivery is below;

Two expert Associate lecturers - Alice Ackroyd and Sarah Stephenson - will deliver the content, both dedicated speakers possess a vast amount of industry and academic experience.

Both speakers are passionate about supporting and coaching management teams in the development of organisation cultures and structures to create workplaces where people feel valued, rewarded and can deliver their best.

Alice Ackroyd

Dedicated to helping management teams create structures and cultures where people feel valued, rewarded and able to deliver their best!

An L&D and HR specialist with board level experience in customer and patient focused multi site, international and start up environments.

Specialising in design and implementation of HR and Leadership Strategy, Organisation & Leadership Development and HR Business Partnering. Experience across a diverse range of commercial environments from global organisations to SME's.

Sarah Stephenson

I am a business psychologist applying occupational psychology principles in the workplace to improve performance. I have worked with organisations in the area of coaching, leadership and organisational development, change management, psychometrics, assessment and selection and neurodiversity. I have collaborated with senior academics and leaders on recent projects involving leadership development, coaching, change management, interview training, graduate employability and resilience.

My previous international commercial roles in financial services and publishing/events have allowed me to deliver broad insight of business development, relationship management, team development and training, and exposure to a multinational cross-sector client base. I am skilled at adapting to changing environments and networks, consulting and negotiating with a customer-oriented approach.

Having completed a language degree, I spent my early career in finance in London and Paris, nurturing sustainable relationships with banks and investment managers. I developed customer accounts in a highly competitive market.

Subsequently, I then spent ten years in the media and publishing industry before I decided a change of career beckoned and completed two Masters courses. I now work as a project manager, associate lecturer and business psychologist at Newcastle Business School, combining my interest in leadership development, organisational change and all things related to occupational and organisational psychology.

British Psychological Society Test User Qualified, Personality and Ability (RQTU).

Newcastle business school has an established track record for working with and support North East SMEs.

This is an online programme delivered over Microsoft Teams with businesses receiving up to 12 hours of online advice, workshops and mentoring.

Micro & Small businesses located in Tyne and Wear or Northumberland that have been trading for at least 12 months (as per ERDF size regulations).

To deliver a blend of skills that allows Micro and Small Businesses to hire and retain talented individuals.

On completion of the short course businesses will be able to:
