Can you visualise how to manage a luxury brand, taking into consideration contemporary issues around production, distribution and consumption? Could you adapt a creative approach, and innovate within the field of professional luxury brand management? Passionate about the worth of the luxury consumable goods market? Our Luxury Brand Management master’s course will provide you with critical knowledge and awareness of the complex issues involved in the luxury consumable goods sector.

You will work on concepts such as brand management, marketing, advertising and social media through research-informed teaching and learning. You will be educated on the circular economy and what it means for the production, distribution and consumption of luxury goods. You will broaden your perspective through the consideration of ethics, corporate social responsibility, enterprise and leadership. By learning to consider these elements of luxury brand management you will be prepared with the skills to take on both creative and management roles in the luxury goods industry.

Working on a live project could offer you exciting, hands-on experience within a luxury brand role. Exploring real briefs can help you gain the hands-on practical insight and knowledge that employers are looking for, and give you a fantastic opportunity to stand out in a very competitive jobs market. 

Assessment is based on coursework and this will include presentations, portfolios, reports and case studies, giving you multiple methods to show your understanding of the course material. If you would prefer a more in depth course of study, the MA Luxury Brand Management is available with Advanced Practice which includes either an internship, consultancy project or research project. Moreover, there is no requirement to have studied business or brand management at undergraduate level to apply.

Entry Requirements 2022/23

Standard Entry

Applicants should normally have:

A minimum of a 2:2 honours degree in any discipline. Applicants with appropriate work experience and/or a relevant professional qualification will be considered.

Design Process (Core,30 Credits)

Through studying on this module, you will learn about the three fields of design knowledge described above, which you will interpret relative to your own practice. You will apply this knowledge in co-creative practice and will reflect on your experience to summarise the utility and limitations of methods employed. You will learn about action research methods and will build your own action research process models and recording templates that you will apply in practice to facilitate your development as a reflective practitioner. In parallel, you will learn about theories of enterprise and innovation and will apply this knowledge in action by exploring business models and intellectual property. You will also learn about cross-cultural collaboration by applying relevant concepts from literature whilst working in multi-cultural teams.

The underpinning knowledge and understanding will be applied in the context of a collaborative project with industry or other organisation, which will help you learn effective ways of working in multi-cultural/multi-disciplinary teams.

In this module, you will critically engage with luxury brands across numerous platforms in the form of: fashion, watches, jewellery, beverages, automobiles, hotels, retail locations, and travel and leisure experiences. Finally, you will analyse luxury brands and their strategic management within a contemporary global context to gain a critical understanding of how such brands are marketing and consumed within comparative international markets.

Luxury Brand Value (Core,30 Credits)

In this module you will first consider what is meant by “value”, and why luxury brand value can be perceived in different ways within an organization. You will then explore the concept of luxury brand value through the eyes of a Marketing Manager, Finance Officer, IT Director, and the CEO. You will also explore the impact on luxury brand value from stakeholders in the luxury brands industry, such as the Press and Financial Markets.

Finally, you will examine how these different perspectives on value can be brought together through concepts such as Balanced Scorecard. Value-Based Management, etc.

You will be equipped with the right knowledge around organisational structure, organisational culture and functional leadership of luxury brands. You will review case studies will give you the success and failure stories of value within luxury brands. You will recognise the skills, competence, capabilities and knowledge that a luxury brand manager needs to make effective decisions in light of business needs.

Luxury Brand Project (Core,30 Credits)

Initial lectures examine issues such as the context of the luxury consumer goods industries, the characteristics of luxury brand products, the day-to-day issues of the luxury industries with a specific focus on the political economy of luxury brands, the role of audiences in consuming luxury products and finally the main trends in the luxury consumer goods industries. The project then involves a case study in the luxury consumer goods industry. You will be set an industry related brief (which may also be part of a live project with a luxury brand company) and assessed through an a/v presentation delivered to peers, industry professionals of that company (if applicable) and academics. You will produce a 4000-word essay that answers the industry-facing brief.

Luxury Brand Management Dissertation (Core,60 Credits)

In this module, you will synthesise the learning from semesters 1 and 2 to create a written dissertation of 15000 words.
The thesis will demonstrate you to recognise the value of luxury brand management within luxury brands and the luxury brand market.

This will evidence an analysis of advanced academic research, debates, and use of theories that demonstrate real world discipline specific value within a luxury brand context. You will take an increasingly autonomous approach to your studies in developing, embedding and clarifying personally developed research theme, theories and experiences that will be realised through a thesis topic that critically, but also potentially practically, engages with a luxury brand issue.

On completion of the dissertation, you will have the skills and abilities to have a career with a luxury brand and make a positive impact in the luxury consumer goods industry. In addition, utilising the CSR knowledge and gained to be able to make purposeful contribution to the world.
