Career Path: PhD Student & Demonstrator (Psychology Department), Northumbria University
Location: Newcastle upon Tyne, UK

Having always had an interest in human behaviour I chose to complete a BSc in Psychology at Northumbria in 2010, throughout which I developed a substantial interest in pursuing a career in psychological research. I then continued onto the MSc Health Psychology in 2012 which furthered my interest, with a focus on health related research. On completion of this degree I decided to stay in academia and aimed to gain a Research Assistant position or PhD studentship within the area of Health Psychology.

What are you doing now?

I am currently in the first year of my PhD study within the Psychology department at Northumbria University. My project examines the mechanisms underpinning the links between aspects of personality and physical health within the general population.MSc Health Psychology Sarah Allen

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

I chose to study the MSc in Health Psychology at Northumbria due to the interesting variety of modules on offer with the added benefit of gaining BPS accredited chartered Health Psychologist stage 1 training.

What was it like studying at Northumbria?

My experience of studying at both undergraduate and postgraduate level was very enjoyable and beneficial.The atmosphere is friendly and professional, the teaching is excellent, offering a range of interesting lectures and interactive workshops and seminars and interesting variety of assessments and applied opportunities.

What impressed you most about our academic staff?

All of the academic staff are friendly, approachable and professional subject specialists.

How connected was your course with industry?

The MSc Health Psychology course provided substantial and useful research experience, training in statistical techniques and furnished students with broad knowledge and practical experience of the subject area. There were many relevant and interesting guest lecturers which contributed to making the course varied, contemporary and never boring.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/give your career an edge?

The course provided me with research experience, subject knowledge and statistical training which has enabled me to embark on a PhD in the area of Health Psychology.

What was the best thing about your course?

The tight-knit, friendly and supportive student cohort

Which skills/knowledge did you learn on your course that you use most now throughout your career?

I now use my knowledge of health psychology theories and practices as well as the a range of research skills I gained throughout the course, everyday.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Northumbria University?

Throughout the MSc I enjoyed the various fascinating lectures, as well as the opportunity to participate in enthusiastic and informed discussions with fellow students in workshops and seminars .

What advice would you give somebody who is thinking of studying at Northumbria?

I would definitely consider studying the MSc in Health Psychology at Northumbria University if you are looking to advance your career and gain valuable experience through the completion of a fascinating range of modules taught by interesting and professional specialists in the field.
