In the Direct Loan Program, the U.S. Department of Education lends the money directly to students through the student’s school.

Other sources of financial aid include private loans and 529 plans. A private alternative loan is a non-federal education loan, through a private lender, typically in the student’s name and requiring a cosigner. Approval and interest rates are based on the creditworthiness of the borrower and cosigner. A 529 plan is a tax advantaged savings plan that can be used to fund higher education expenses.
