Each month, we will be compiling a selection of events for you here, so that you can keep track of things happening both on and off campus. From events in student accommodation and society socials to Northumbria University Sport fixtures and pop-up events on campus, we've got you covered!

Durham Saturday Outdoor Market

Location: Newcastle

Looking for some unique new pieces for your wardrobe? Perhaps some new home décor? Durham outdoor market takes place every Saturday at the Market Place, bringing together great small independent traders, selling anything from clothing and fashion accessories, to toiletries, make-up, homeware and more. It is open from 9am till 4pm and entry is free.

Ouseburn Summer Walks

Location: Newcastle

Discover Ouseburn through a guided Summer walk. These themed tours will take place on Tuesday 2 August and Tuesday 16 August and will take you through the history and wildlife of this quirky neighbourhood in Newcastle. Walks cost £5 per person and booking is essential.  

Gosforth Beer Festival

Location: Newcastle

Celebrate a free weekend of craft beer, live music and street food at Gosforth Civic Centre. There will be 20 taps of the best local and national beer on keg and cask, street food from some of the most beloved food trucks in Newcastle, live bands, and even retro gaming. The event will take place on August 5th, 6th and 7th.

River Stage Festival

Location: London

The National Theatre’s River Stage mini-festival returns to the South Bank for a month of outdoor live music, dance, performance and workshops. Their programme is quite varied and it lasts until August 14th, featuring different weekend activities that will take place in front of the theatre. LGBTQ+nsg Coffee Social

Location: Newcastle

Come join the LGBT+ Northern Social Group on August 14th for their monthly coffee social. This time, it will be at The Magic Hat, a café that rescues surplus food that’s destined for landfill. They have an ever changing, and ever glorious, menu and a delicious drinks selection. Entry is free.

Durham Riverbanks History Walk at Durham Cathedral

Location: Newcastle

Go on a 1.5 mile walk with a cathedral guide to learn the fascinating stories of how the riverbanks and woodlands around the cathedral have changed through time. The tour will begin at 10:30 on August 20th and tickets will be £5. Click here for more information.

Feast by the Sea

Location: Newcastle

Come along the Spanish City Plaza for a Feast by the Sea! Starting at 11am on the 20th and 21st of August, the event will feature street food, bars, and live entertainment. 

Picasso Ingres: Face to Face

Location: London

The National Gallery will be hosting an exhibition on Pablo Picasso in partnership with the Norton Simon Museum in California. For the first time, they will be showcasing Picasso’s ‘Woman with a Book’ (1932) alongside the painting that inspired it, ‘Madame Moitessier’ by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. It will run until October 9th and admission is free. For more details, click here.

Spanish City Summer Funfair

Location: Newcastle

This annual summer funfair will be back at Whitley Bay on August 25th. You’ll find it on The Links, just a stone’s throw away from the new Spanish City, and it will gather fun attractions, arcades and some of the best ice cream and fish and chips in the country. Entry is free.

Castlebrainia Pub Quiz

Location: Newcastle

Test your 1990s video game knowledge on this themed pub quiz! Head over Bobiks on August 25th at 6pm for an evening full of fun – answer questions, win prizes, play games! (yes, actual games!) You can purchase your tickets here.

Take a Surf Lesson in Tynemouth

Location: Newcastle

There’s no better way to cool down than by catching waves in the (not so warm) North Sea! Tynemouth is quite a popular hub among surfers, and it is quite easy to sign up for surf lessons or rent some equipment. Tynemouth Surf Co and Longsands Surf School have some interesting offerings for anyone interested in learning or improving their skills. 

Salt Market Social

This monthly warehouse event brings together the best of the region’s street food stalls, craft beers and cocktails at North Shields Fish Quay. Taking place the 26th, 27th and 28th of August, it is a must for any self-proclaimed foodie. Entry is free.

Notting Hill Carnival

Location: London

Notting Hill Carnival is the largest street festival in Europe, and it celebrates the rich history of Caribbean culture in London. Come watch elaborate floats and customed performers wind their way through the streets of west London in the carnival parade and dance to the sound of steel bands and calypso music throughout the bank holiday weekend (August 27th till August 29th). Entry is free.

Battle Royale at Wylam Brewery

Location: Newcastle

This all valley tournament will bring in the champions from Battle of the Burger, Slice Wars, Argie Bhaji and Thai Kwondo. Expect amazing vendors, drinks, ice cream, fries, coffees, and music spinners. The event will run from Friday August 27th until Saturday August 28th at Wylam Brewery. Entry is free.

Life Drawing Workshop at Bobiks

Location: Newcastle

Would you like to take your drawing skills to the next level? Bobiks will host a life drawing workshop on August 28th with artist Bernadette Koranteng which will guide you through the process of portraying a human figure. The class is suitable for all levels, whether you’re already experienced or a complete beginner. Tickets are £20 and all drawing materials plus a fabulous model are provided.
